Ridgely's Record
February 2004

Community Meeting
There will be a community meeting at the Camden Pub on Wednesday, February 4 at 7:00 p.m. Jack Danna of the Washington Boulevard/Pigtown Main Street program will give a brief presentation. We are also trying to get a representative of the Baltimore Police to talk about crime. The meeting is a community-sanctioned event.

Developing a Delightful Neighborhood
This is the theme for the Association's strategic plan. All homes in the neighborhood should have received a survey last month. We will use the responses to form the basis of the startegic plan. That's why it's so important for everyone to complete the survey. If you need an extra copy, please come to the community meeting on February 4. Click here to download a PDF of the residents' survey. The deadline for returning the surveys is February 6.

City-Smart Safety Tip
Control your keys. Never leave an identification tag on your key ring. If your keys are lost or stolen, it could help a thief locate your car or burglarize your home. If your car is stolen, call 911 immediately. Your quick action may help to recover your vehicle and prevent its use for illegal purposes.

Crime and Safety Committee
The Ridgely's Delight Association has established a new Crime and Safety Committee. We are looking for volunteers to participate in a new "Citizens on Patrol" program. After the required three hours of training, partners will walk the neighborhood together at assigned times. With a sufficient number of volunteers, each person would only need to donate 2-3 hours each month.
If you are interested, please fill out the application on the back of the newsletter and turn it in at the community meeting on February 4 or drop it off at 668 Washington Boulevard. For more information, please contact Betsy at 410-336-1673 or Brian at 410-752-8746.

Useless Trivia
February 7 is the 100th anniversary of the Great Fire of Baltimore.

Social Notes
The weather's too cold to venture far from home, but there's no need to stay inside. Here are some fun events around the neighborhood this month.

On Friday, February 6 (the birthday of Babe Ruth), at noon, the Babe Ruth Museum will invite visitors to enjoy birthday cake and be part of a champagne toast. The event is free and open to the public and will be held at the Museum, 216 Emory Street.

That evening, Babe's Birthday Bash will be held at Bambino's Pub at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. The event will feature all-you-can-eat-and-drink baseball fare, as well as appearances by members of the Baltimore Orioles. The evening will also include door prizes, a silent auction, and music. Tickets for the Birthday Bash are $30 each (or four for $100). To order tickets, call the Museum at 410-727-1539.

Looking for some after-work fun on a Friday? Join the crowd at the Ridgely's Happy Hour at Sliders on Friday, February 13, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

Thanks, Merci, Gracias, Danke
Thanks to Paul Harris for his recent work on the landscaping upgrade around the Ridgely's Delight sign on Russell Street.

Reminder
Please ask your visitors not to honk their horns when they come to pick you up. The rest of the neighborhood doesn't care to listen to it. Tell your visitors to have some class and knock on your door.

Holiday
Monday, February 16 is a federal holiday, and City offices will be closed.

Deliverypeople Needed
Can you spare a few minutes a month to help keep your neighbors informed about important neighborhood issues? We need volunteers to distribute the Ridgely's Record. Carriers must deliver papers before the first of every month or notify the chief distributor that they are unable to fulfill their commitment for a given month. Volunteers receive their copies through their mailslot. If you can distribute to your street every month or want to volunteer as a backup, please contact Paul at 410-837-6321 or pharris@ridgelysdelight.org.

Snow Reminder
You are required by law to shovel the sidewalk in front of your property, even if you are a tenant. It's also a considerate to your neighbors and can help you avoid a lawsuit. The job will be a lot easier if you shovel right after the snow ends rather than later when it freezes. If you are not inclined to do the work yourself, look for one of the ambitious folks walking through the neighborhood with a shovel and pay him or her a few bucks to do the job.

Renovating?
If you're thinking about additions or renovations to your home please call Paul at 410-234-1350. He's the CHAP representative and knows the rules and regulations governing what can be done in a historic neighborhood like Ridgely's. You can also email him: chap@ridgelysdelight.org.
